Scotland   Autumn 2018

In Scotland we plan a trip to St Andrews in the late summer or early autumn to see the Maitland Heriot photo collection. Isabella Maitland Heriot was an active photographer, started in 1848, and was trained either by Fox Talbot or by one of his associates. Her album includes photos of Lacock Abbey, Fox Talbot's home. The Getty Collection in Los Angeles has bought some of her photos, which gives an indication of the importance of her work. She died young, aged 23 in 1853.

England Summer  2018

In England we plan a visit to Ham House, Richmond,  in June or July.  Many of us have been to Ham House already, so this will be a specialist tour, focussing on the artworks rather than a general house visit, though there will be ample time to tour the house on your own afterwards.  Ham was the London home of the Duke of Lauderdale and contains the furniture and pictures which he and Elizabeth Murray bought after their marriage in 1672. It is the only house in Europe to have its 17th century furniture intact.  A 1588 portrait of John Maitland, first Lord Thirlestane, from Ham is currently on display at the National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
